Photonic Crystal Devices for Nano- and Bio-photonics:

Photonic crystal nano-structures open unprecedented opportunities for construction of novel photonic devices and integrated nanophotonic systems, due to their unique capability to manipulate light at sub-wavelength scales. In this talk, I will present my recent work in photonic crystals and their applications. I will first introduce two dimensional coupled photonic crystal nanocavity arrays and show that they can reduce the group velocity of light by many orders of magnitude. I will introduce a new type of laser composed of coherently coupled nanocavities that enable high output powers with low switching thresholds. These lasers achieve dramatically higher power conversion efficiency with respect to other nano-cavity lasers. I will also show nanocavity lasers that can be modulated at speeds far exceeding today’s state of the art semiconductor lasers. Next, I will present photonic crystal nanocavity sensors and discuss their integration with microfluidic systems for sensitive detection. Finally, I will discuss how strong optical nonlinearities in photonic crystal nanocavities can be used to achieve ultra-low power all-optical switching and Raman lasing in silicon, and also be used for Raman spectroscopy.
