chromide.jpg

Above: Etroplus Maculatus (Orange Chromide)

The orange chromide is the only cichlid that can live in both fresh and salt water. As such, this beautiful fish is a striking example of adaptability. It is an "Orange Julian" color with a highly reflective chromelike marking under the eyes; this chrome touch comes from dielectric stacks within the scales bonded by organic matrix. The cichlid family of fish (Cichlidae) also includes angelfish, African cichlids, and many other popular aquarium fish.

Why organic solar cells could help power society
      Friday, 13 April 2007

I have analyzed different cleantech energy options, from Brazilian biofuel to tandem silicon solar cells. My conclusion is that solar technologies will supercede other cleantech options (biofuel, wind, etc), and organic solar cells could supercede silicon solar cells by 2050. For the full analysis, please read Organic_SolarCells-EHE.pdf Organic_SolarCells-EHE.pdf

I wrote this paper for Dr. Aldo daRosa's "Energy processes" class.

      SiGe Electrooptic Modulator
      Monday, 15 January 2007
To further the effort to integrate photonics into silicon chips, devices made from material systems that are compatible with CMOS processing should be investigated. I am investigating the use of the CMOS-compatible Si-Ge material system for one of the basic building blocks of integrated optics, an electrooptic modulator. An electrooptic modulator embedded in an absorption-enhancing resonant cavity formed by quarter-wave Bragg stacks is being characterized via simulation.

      Slave to chocolate
      Monday, 06 August 2007
Almost 70% of the cocoa consumed by the world is grown in West Africa. Most cocoa is grown, specifically, in Cote d'Ivoire. Because there are over half a million cocoa farms there, competition is fierce. Price competition and widespread poverty encourages the use of child, endentured or forced (slave) labor. African children are trafficked across country borders and sold to farms. Read more to find out some of the causes, and how you can choose to help by choosing your chocolate brands.
